Baby in a Bonnet: Margaret Kellum, a Portrait Drawing in Red Chalk by Jacki Kellum. Red chalk drawings date back at least to #rembrandt and #daVinci. Margaret is my great-niece. My sister-in-law made the bonnet. I'll be glad when I have completed my move to Water Valley. I have several red chalk portrait drawing commissions yet to do. They are on my back burner. Everything is packed. I've been doing these red chalk #portraits for many years. I drew Margaret's dad in red chalk when he was this age. Her mama just retrieved this framed piece from the framer in Jackson, MS, and moments ago, she sent me a photo of the framed pic. That's why I'm sharing this #drawing today. @quinnkellum @susankellum Today, I'm digging up and potting my roses to prepare them to move to their new home in Water Valley, MS, In addition to my art & writing, I am an avid gardener. Here is a post that shows some pictures from my cottage garden style of gardening: https://cottagegardenliving.com Like everyone else in the picture book world, I am saddened by the loss of Ian Falconer. He changed the world through his Olivia Books. At the age of 63, he has passed away. What a loss! #pb #Olivia #ianfaconer When I was a tiny child, my mother and my grandmother taught me how to embroider. The highlight of my week was when I would get to go to the dimestore and pick up my design to #embroider for the week. #Embroidery is still the core of my #textile art.#textileart #embroidery You might also enjoy seeing my hand-coiled #fabric #baskets--more of my textile art. Every coil is handmade and #hand-stitched. No glue. I invented this method of coiled basket making. Every basket has a #handmade #velvet or satin or #tulle #rose. #textileart I'm packing my various types of art. I thought you might enjoy seeing some of my textile art. I call these Drawings - I draw on fabric with colorful satin cords. They are very much like my contour drawings done with ink on paper. But these are all hand-stitched. No glue. https://jackikellum.com/time-for-another-miracle-new.../ In this post, I write about some of the reasons that Water Valley, MS, is the perfect spot for me to call "Home," Gourmet Eateries, Artist Haven -- in a town that looks and feels like the Old South or like it's carved out of the movie Pollyanna. #watervalley #Mississippi When I was a child, my little town had a drugstore that looked very much like the one at Water Valley. If you substituted the turquoise for red, you'd see the drugstore where over half a century ago, my daddy took me out for nickel cokes and dishes of ice cream. My little town's drugstore is boarded shut now, but the Turnage Drugstore at Water Valley is still chugging along. I feel very strongly that in moving to Water Valley, I'm finally going back home. #old #drugstore #sodafountain #watervalley #vintage #mississippi
