Cotton Plant, Drawing of Cotton, Jacki Kellum Drawing, Jacki Kellum Garden Journal, Painting of Cotton, September

September 1, 2021 – Wednesday

I walked outside this morning, and and a crisp, cool fallness met me at the door. It makes me think of

Football games and marching bands,
And dewy nights, and hands-in-hands,
And cotton fields in other lands–
Septembers of my youth.

I am a big advocate of shutting down the self-editor at the beginning of a new writing project, but like a river rat wrangling down an alligator, I do wrestle with the “show-don’t-tell” rule. As soon as I finish writing my first draft, I begin peeking at my words and asking myself, “Am I showing or telling?” #writingcommunity This is the 2-page spread on pages 10-11 of Small in the City. The text of that book begins on page 10. There is no text on page 11. Not every page of a #pb has text. There is no text on these pages. 3 illustrations on the left page. 1 illustration is on the right. When possible, allow the illustrations to tell the story of your PICTURE book. A picture is worth 1,000 words. Somewhere along the way, I read that most picture books today have 32 pages, and I took that as the gospel. I am discovering the page-number thing is changing, and I am reminding myself that I can't always believe everything that I read. It is important to research. #14DayPBChallenge Time to create a text dummy and test the words of a picture book. Check to see if TOO MUCH text will land on any facing 2 pages. Work on your page turns. Pace your #pb Edit. Delete. Simplify. Oh! and Good Morning! When I wrote The Donkey's Song, I recalled the images that were planted in my mind's eye long ago--when I was a tiny child. When I began writing The Donkey’s Song, I closed my eyes and saw those images inside my mind, and I simply typed. Rejection and fear of rejection cause us to want to lie down and quit. Santat's After the Fall is about Getting Back Up and Trying Again. Do It! Try Again! #fear #pb #amwriting #WritingCommunity #14DayPBChallenge Day 6 - Write Your First Draft. Today, I want you to put away your notes, descriptions, and everything else that might distract you. Close your eyes and recall what you see about your new picture book in your mind --And Simply #Write! No stopping to #Edit https://www.instagram.com/p/CcGhqXSpNJv/
